ADHD in Adults
ADHD is a mental health condition characterized by difficulty maintaining attention. It starts from childhood and sometimes persists into adulthood. Adult attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a mental health condition that can result in low self-esteem, poor performance at work and unstable relationships.
Some people with ADHD have fewer symptoms as they age, but some adults continue to have major symptoms that interfere with their daily activities. In adults, the main features of ADHD may include difficulty paying attention, impulsiveness and restlessness, disorganization and problems prioritizing.
ADHD often goes unrecognized throughout childhood. This was especially common in the past, when very few people were aware of it. Instead of recognizing your symptoms and identifying the real issue, your family, teachers, or others may have labelled you as a dreamer, goof-off, slacker, troublemaker, or just a bad student. Alternately, you may have been able to compensate for the symptoms of ADHD when you were young, only to run into problems as your responsibilities increased as an adult. The more balls you are now trying to keep in the air- pursuing a career, raising a family, running a household- the greater the demand on your abilities to organize, focus, and remain calm. This can be challenging for anyone, but if you have ADHD, it can feel downright impossible.
What causes ADHD in adults?
Common causes include: stress, poor sleep, certain foods and additives, overstimulation and technology. Once you recognize what triggers your ADHD symptoms, you can make the necessary lifestyle changes to better control episodes.
What helps adults with ADHD?
Working out is perhaps the most positive and efficient way to reduce hyperactivity and inattention from ADHD. Exercise can relieve stress, boost your mood and calm your mind, helping work off the excess energy and aggression that can get in the way of relationships and feeling stable.
Conclusion: The good news is that no matter how overwhelming it feels, the challenges of attention deficit disorder are beatable. With education, support and a little creativity, you can learn to manage the symptoms of adult ADHD, even turning some of your weaknesses into strengths. It's never too late to turn the difficulties of adult ADHD around and start succeeding on your own terms.
